Practical info

Currency & Payments

The Hong Kong Dollar (HK$) is the local currency. Cards and mobile payments (Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay) are widely accepted at malls, restaurants, and attractions, but keep HK$300-500 cash for wet markets, small noodle shops, and taxis. ATMs are everywhere; HSBC and Hang Seng have the widest coverage.

Octopus Card

Buy an Octopus card at any MTR station customer service counter (HK$150 including a HK$50 refundable deposit) or add a digital Octopus to your phone wallet. Tap it for MTR, buses, trams, Star Ferry, convenience stores, and many shops. Kids under 3 travel free on MTR, so one child fare card is not needed for your 2-year-old.

SIM / eSIM

Buy a local eSIM before arrival (3HK, csl, or a travel eSIM like Airalo) for around HK$60-120 for 5-8GB over a week. Alternatively grab a physical tourist SIM at the airport or any 7-Eleven. Coverage is excellent everywhere including the MTR and cable car.

Weather & Packing

Oct-Dec is the best season: pleasant 20-27C, low humidity, mostly dry. Bring light layers, a compact umbrella, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes. Interiors and the MTR are heavily air-conditioned, so pack a light sweater for the toddler and grandparents.

Getting Around with a Stroller

Most MTR stations have lifts, but check signage as some exits are stairs-only. Buses and trams are less stroller-friendly; the Airport Express, MTR, and taxis are easiest with a pushchair. A lightweight foldable stroller is ideal for theme-park queues and ferry rides.

Etiquette & Tipping

Tipping is not expected; restaurants add a 10% service charge. Stand on the right on escalators, give up priority seats, and avoid eating on the MTR (it is fined). Locals appreciate a little patience and a queue-respecting attitude.

Arrival

From the Airport to the City

  1. 1Follow signs from arrivals to the Airport Express platform on the lower level.
  2. 2Board the Airport Express toward Hong Kong; ride 2 stops (about 21 min) to Kowloon Station.
  3. 3Tap out and follow signs to the free K1/K5 shuttle bus, or take a short taxi (HK$40-50) to your Tsim Sha Tsui hotel.
  4. 4Alternatively, transfer at Kowloon Station to the Tung Chung line and change at Nam Cheong for the Tuen Ma line toward Tsim Sha Tsui East.
