A first-timer's five-day loop through Okinawa, Japan's subtropical Ryukyu island chain: white-sand beaches, the world-class Churaumi Aquarium, the reborn Shuri Castle, dramatic coral cliffs, sacred UNESCO sites, and a food culture all its own. Currency & Payments

Japan uses the yen (¥). Okinawa is more cash-friendly than Tokyo: convenience stores, bigger restaurants, hotels, and the aquarium take cards, but small izakaya, market stalls, and rural spots may be cash-only. Withdraw yen from 7-Eleven or Japan Post ATMs, which reliably accept foreign cards. Carry ¥5,000-10,000 in cash daily.

Transit Card

Naha's Yui Rail monorail accepts Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards, plus the local OKICA. If you already have a Suica in Apple/Google Wallet, just tap. Otherwise buy a Yui Rail 1-day (¥800) or 2-day (¥1,400) pass, which pays off after 3-4 rides. Note: the monorail does not reach the northern sights.

SIM / eSIM

Buy a Japan travel eSIM (Ubigi, Airalo, or Sakura Mobile) before you land for instant data on arrival. Coverage is strong across the main island. You'll want maps and translation constantly, especially for the north and southeast where English signage thins out.

Getting North

The headline sights (Churaumi Aquarium, Cape Manzamo) are 1.5-2 hours north of Naha with no train link. Choose between renting a car (most flexible, ~¥6,000-8,000/day plus fuel and tolls) or a guided bus day-tour (~¥5,000-7,000, hassle-free). Reserve either in advance, especially in peak season.

Weather & Packing

Subtropical and humid. Oct-Nov is ideal: warm, swimmable sea, eased humidity, lower typhoon risk. Pack light breathable clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a compact rain jacket. Even in autumn, midday sun is strong. Check the typhoon forecast if visiting Jul-Sep.

Etiquette & Tipping

No tipping anywhere; it can cause confusion. Remove shoes when entering traditional restaurants, guesthouses, and temples. At sacred sites like Sefa-utaki, keep voices low and don't touch or climb the rocks. Okinawans are famously laid-back ('uchinaa time')-relax and match the pace.

From the Airport to the City

  1. 1Follow signs from arrivals to the Yui Rail monorail station, connected to the domestic terminal via a walkway.
  2. 2Buy a ticket from the machine (~¥270 to Kencho-mae) or tap your Suica/IC card at the gate.
  3. 3Board the Yui Rail (only one line) heading toward Tedako-Uranishi.
  4. 4Ride about 12 minutes and get off at Kencho-mae Station, right beside Kokusai Dori.
  5. 5Exit and walk to your hotel in the Kokusai Dori area.

Day 1 - Naha Arrival & Kokusai Dori

Land, drop bags, and dive straight into Naha's buzzing heart: the shopping-and-food strip of Kokusai Dori and the lively Makishi Public Market. An easy, walkable first day to settle into island rhythm.
